Here is some information on how to register and start a painting business in the state of Massachusetts.

-Register your painting business name.

You may need to register a fictitious name for your business: https://www.sba.gov/starting-business/choose-register-your-business/register-your-business-name

-Select your business structure.

Determine what business structure you wish to have for your painting business: Sole-proprietor, LLC, Partnership, Corporation, etc.: https://www.sba.gov/starting-business/choose-your-business-structure

 -Register your painting business.

Register your new painting business with the state of Massachusetts Secretary of State’s Office

-Open a Business Checking Account.

You will need to open a separate bank account for your painting business with your new business name.

-Taxes.

  -Get Liability Insurance.

 -Register as a Contractor with the state of Massachusetts.

-Worker’s Compensation.

You won’t need to worry about Worker’s Compensation unless you have employees.

-Get Health Insurance.

You will be responsible for getting your own health insurance.  If you have employees, you will need a plan that will include their health needs also.

-City License.

You may be required to obtain a license operate your painting business in a particular locale, whether you are a resident, or not.
